#ShouldIWorry – If I have a hernia on my groin?

A groin hernia (also known as an inguinal hernia) is the most common type of hernia. It occurs when the abdominal wall and groin muscles weaken, allowing fatty or intestinal tissues to protrude through the weakened area.

If you have an inguinal hernia, you may find it most noticeable by its appearance as groin hernias cause bulges along the pubic or groin area that can appear to increase in size when you stand up or cough. This type of hernia may be painful or sensitive to the touch.

Contrary to popular belief, inguinal hernias can happen to both men and women, although men tend to get them more often.

If you have an inguinal hernia, you may not need to seek immediate treatment if the size of the hernia is small and there’s no pain. However, prompt medical attention may be required should you start experiencing pain when you bend over, cough or carry a heavy object.
